Requirements for Plumbers

Plumbers are required to go through a state licensing process. Each state’s process varies somewhat, but the general titles and examination requirements are the same. There are National Plumbing Codes that all plumbers must follow, so a training program is vital to educate plumbers on those codes. Different states also have their own codes, as well as city codes, so plumbers have to be very knowledgeable in their field.

A plumber’s job description encompasses not only book knowledge, but also hands on knowledge. Knowledge of chemistry and math are essential parts of a plumber’s job description. Plumbers have to make calculations about the layout of a plumbing system as well as in the measurements of pipes that are getting ready to be cut and fit. Chemistry is required in dealing with various gasses and liquids that are encountered on the job, such as pipes that carry oxygen and other gasses in a hospital setting, which can be extremely dangerous if not handled properly.

The hands on training part of the plumber’s job description include everything from pipes to tools to blueprints. Plumbers have to know what different types of pipes would be appropriate to use in different situations. They have to know how to cut the pipes to fit the different job situations. They also have to be able to find the leaks in the pipes, even if the pipe is hidden underground using different methods of trouble shooting.

In addition, there are times in a plumber’s job description where they may have to cut holes in walls in order to reach a problem area or to install new plumbing. Thus, they have to know about construction, so that the area looks right after they are finished. They have to be able to hang supports and visualize the layout so that the finished product comes out correctly. They also have to be able to deal with customers and direct less experienced workers, overseeing all aspects of the job.

Training

Training for a plumber’s job requires education in the classroom as well as on the job training. It is difficult to learn all the skills required and situations that might be faced in the real world from a seat in a classroom. Online courses are valuable assets for the class work part of the training, since it gives the student flexibility to work in the field and gain those apprenticeship hours, while still moving forward with the class work required to complete the training.

The level of training depends on the level that the plumber wants to achieve. Every plumber has to start as an apprentice. In order to apply for a Tradesman license, which is granted through each state according to their rules and regulations, an apprentice must have completed the course work and also a minimum of four thousand hours working under a Master plumber in the field. All hours have to be verified according to the requirements of the state. That means that an apprentice plumber must have worked full time for one hundred weeks, or almost two years before being able to take the exam for the Tradesman license.

Certain plumber jobs require an even higher level of training, such as a Journeyman or Master level plumber. In order to take the exam for Journeyman licensing, the plumber has to have completed at least eight thousand hours under a Master plumber, which is nearing four years of working in the field before being ready for that kind of licensing. Master plumbing licenses require a plumber to have worked in the field for one year as a Journeyman before being allowed to take the exam.

In the apprenticeship, plumbers learn all that they need for plumbing jobs that they will experience in the field when they are licensed. They learn how to handle and cut pipes, tubing, and fittings. They make calculations so that the right amounts of materials are used. They read building plans and wiring plans so that the jobs can be done safely and effectively. They learn to trouble shoot and work with dish washers, washers, toilets and other plumbing appliances. In addition, they learn customer service and also how to direct less experienced workers.

Plumbing Licenses

In order to work in any state, a plumber must be licensed. County licensed plumbers means that the state license records are made more searchable by organizing them by the county in which the plumber works. The only exception to a plumber needing a license to work is when a plumber is an apprentice, officially applied for and accepted, to work under a licensed plumber in order to complete the training for the job.

County licensed plumbers must have at least two years of experience as well as have completed the plumbing course work in order to be eligible to take the limited Tradesman licensing exam. This exam allows the Tradesman plumber to practice plumbing without supervision on a limited basis 鈥?usually with simple jobs and not overseeing other workers. After two more years (four thousand more hours) the plumber is eligible for an even higher exam, that of a Journeyman plumber. A Journeyman license allows a plumber to have minor oversight of other workers, draw up limited plumbing system plans, and do more complex work.

The highest license for a county licensed plumber is that of a Master plumber, which requires a Journeyman plumber to spend one more year under the supervision of a Master plumber in order to be eligible for the exam. This exam requires the plumber to draw up the plans for a multi-story building’s plumbing system in addition to the other exam work. With this license, the Master plumber can oversee less qualified workers as well as work in almost any plumbing situation that is out there.

When a person is trying to find a county licensed plumber, the best place to look is online for sites that list licensed plumbers by county or city. From there, it is good to look at each plumbing company’s website to see if they list the qualifications of their plumbers. Some sites list what the lowest licensing is that they require, which can help a person decide what company to go with in regards to experience. For minor work, a Tradesman plumber would usually be fine, but for larger jobs with planning or a complex problem, Journeyman or Master plumbers are a must.

Types of Licensing

Tradesman licenses are limited, since the plumber has only completed his plumbing school and four thousand hours under a Journeyman or Master plumber during his apprenticeship. Tradesman licenses do allow the plumber to work on his own, and is an adequate choice for smaller jobs when making sure a plumber is licensed.

For larger jobs, an individual needs to be sure that the plumber is licensed at least at the Journeyman level. This ensures that the plumber has had at least eight thousand hours of training in the field under a Master plumber, which equates to about four years working full time in plumbing. During that time he is able to experience a wide variety of situations and is under the care of a more qualified plumber to answer questions and teach what to do in each situation. The Journeyman exam is also complex, with a written part, a sanitary waste and vent installation part which is hands on, and also a shop work part which is also hands on with tools and materials of the trade.

A licensed Master plumber is the highest licensing level for a plumber, other than going on to become a plumbing inspector. If a plumber is licensed at a Master level, it means that he worked as a Journeyman plumber for at least a year under a Master plumber before being eligible for the Master plumbing exam. This exam has many of the same features as the Journeyman exam, except it also adds a plumbing system planning section where the plumber has to design the plans for a multi-story building’s plumbing system.

An individual can find out whether a plumber is licensed by talking to the company directly and asking specific questions about the different types of licenses for plumbers. He can also look at the company’s website and often find the licensing information, since reputable companies want clients to be sure they are getting quality service.

How to Choose

The best way to compile a list of plumbers is to start talking to people about their experiences with plumbers. People that have used a plumber have great advice as to which ones were good and which ones are not, and it is important to keep both in mind and the reasons why. Ask family, friends and neighbors what the plumbing problem was and who fixed it, and then ask whether they were satisfied with the work based on expertise, cost and time.

If that does not work, there are plenty of websites for people who need a licensed plumber. Usually these lists are compiled by county or city, and will link directly to that plumbing company’s website for more information. That way the person can double check the licensing policies of the company and see what the lowest license is for their plumbers. This will help an individual choose the highest qualified companies for their list.

It is important from the start of the conversation with the company to find out their licensing policies, because if the job is complex, a Journeyman or Master license is what an individual should look for in the plumber who takes the position. He should only get quotes from companies that meet his requirements, or he may find himself at a later date fixing the problem that an inexperienced or under-qualified plumber left behind.

It is always important also to get quotes from at least three companies before choosing one when needing a licensed plumber. Even if the situation needs immediate help, plumbing companies usually send people for quotes right away in emergency situations, so that the quotes can be made quickly and a choice can be made. The quotes should always be in writing with the time, cost, materials and repairs to be made clearly listed out so that there is not confusion on any side.

A person who is interested to become a licensed plumber must be someone who is fairly agile and strong. Plumbing is an active career and requires being able to lift heavy objects, hold them in place, use power tools and move things around. It also requires fitting into tight spaces and still being able to maneuver things around, thus making the typical description of an overweight plumber a difficult one to swallow, considering the job description.

Steps to Licensing

There are three main steps to become a licensed plumber. The first step is to get training in a plumber training program through a college, university or trade school. This training program teaches the aspiring plumber math and science that is needed to do his job, mechanical design skills so that they can draw out the plumbing systems in new builds as well as read them, and also gives them skill in repairing walls and floors for when they have to cut holes in these in order to fix a leak.

The next part of the training to become a licensed plumber is the actual apprenticeship that is done under the supervision of a licensed plumber of Journeyman or Master status. The apprentice must complete at least four thousand hours under the licensed plumber before he is eligible to take the Tradesman licensing exam, which is the lowest level of licensing for a plumber and is limited in scope. Four thousand hours equals out to about two years on the job full time.

During the apprenticeship part of the training, the plumber learns all about pipes, tubing and fittings. He learns to detect leaks and to read building and wiring plans. He also learns to repair appliances such as washers, dish washers and disposals, as well as installing fixtures such as faucets, drains, sinks and tubs. In addition, the apprentice learns about customer service and managing other workers, all of which are important to becoming a licensed plumber.

The final step to becoming a licensed plumber is to take the licensing exam which has three parts. The first part is the written portion. The second part requires the sanitary waste and vent installation be proved out in a practical, hands on way. The final part is in the shop, doing work measuring and cutting, showing the use of tools.

This is important, because if you are going to be putting in the time and effort to becoming a Journeyman plumber, of course you are not going to want to have to change careers a few months down the road. Are you going to be able to handle the job of plumbing, which can often be pretty grimy?

The Salary

Another very important aspect that you are going to want to consider is the Journeyman plumber salary. You get paid well for being a Journeyman plumber, but is it going to be enough to support you and your family? Keep in mind that the salary you will get paid will depend on a few things, including the number of hours you work and what area you are working in.
